NAVIGATION
In both summer and winter the majority of incidents and accidents stem from a navigation error. Unlike many mountain areas around the world the UK’s mountains have no signs or indicators as to which way to go making navigation an essential skill particularly given our often wild weather. Even on a sunny day the weather can change quickly with often misty and foggy conditions which for those without strong navigation skills can lead to things going wrong very quickly.
We are able to deliver a comprehensive navigation course giving you the skills to deal with safely navigating through the UK’s mountains. This is done during a practical day or weekend out in the hills learning to understand maps and compasses and how this relates to the ground we are on and the routes we chose. For many map reading can seem academic and a bit daunting but with a simple understanding competent navigation skills quickly follow. Our experience and knowledge can help simplify this giving a better understanding.
Although not a substitute for the knowledge of map and compass skills modern technology has given us some new techniques for navigation that should not be ignored. Modern Ordnance Survey apps and mapping on a smart phone gives good accurate navigation when used properly. We cover this comprehensively on our course in addition to the map and compass.
These days are delivered throughout the Highlands and are best delivered as part of a two day course.
We offer a discount for club members and also larger group bookings.
We provide all the mountain safety equipment such as first aid kit, group shelter and we issue each participant an orange survival bag where required. We don’t provide maps but carry one ourselves and can advise which sheet and scale would be best for the course that you are on. We have a full kit list on the site and are happy to help answer any questions you may have.
